Video format conversion: MP4 or WebM? (locally in the browser)

A comparison of MP4 and WebM compatibility and file size, when a format conversion is worth it, and what to watch out for when transcoding locally with TwoThink.

"WeChat will not send it" and "it will not embed on the page" are usually a container or codec that the target does not support. Instead of installing a pile of desktop encoders, try converting it once in the browser and see whether it plays.

MP4 or WebM?

MP4WebM
CompatibilityFriendlier on phones, in WeChat and in most playersModern browsers and some sites
SizeUsually slightly larger at the same qualityDepends on the encoding settings
RecommendationUse MP4 by defaultOnly when WebM is explicitly required

Open Convert Video Format, pick the target format and export. If the only problem is that the file is too big, Compress Video is usually enough — you do not have to change the container.

Order of operations with trimming and speed changes

Recommended order: trim to the final length first → then transcode or compress → watermark last. That keeps the number of times you encode the whole footage down.

What local transcoding means

Transcoding eats CPU, so large files take their time, and switching to another tab can slow it down. The upside is that nothing is uploaded, which makes it a good fit for internal material.
